On Sunday, May 31 at 7pm, the digital television station, MSNBC (channel 115 in Victoria, BC), will air a one hour Dateline documentary called, “Under the Bridge”. The documentary explores the tragic teen violence that led to the death of 14 year old Reena Virk in November of 1997. Author Gordon Cruse talks about his experiences as a youth worker in the juvenile detention centre in Victoria, BC; as he spent years rehabilitating the teen perpetrators and other youth who have been involved in criminal activities. Interviews with the parents of the victim and Dr. Sybla Artz, a professor at UVIC who specializes in youth and child development delve into the possible causes and the consequences of these violent actions.
Proceeds from this book go to support the Reena Virk Youth Justice Award, presented annually by Camosun College. The Reena Virk Award is presented to an eligible student enrolled in the Camosun College Faculty of Criminology, who has an interest in young offenders.

We were thrilled to have such a great review of Dr. Botek’s book.

“Superficially less ambitious but more satisfying is a Jazz memoir by STEPHEN T. BOTEK, a New York psychiatrist born in 1929, SONG ON MY LIPS: Jazz Greats Were My Mentors (Granville Island Publishing, 2008, 352 pages). In books on Jazz, I take pleasure in first-hand experience, cogently presented. A writer who was there is a rare and delightful personage indeed.
. . . Botek reminds me much more of the young James Joyce’s alter ego, Stephen Dedalus, finding himself as an artist.” [excerpt]
