Newly retired baby boomers, Irene Butler and her husband Rick, chose to escape routine and trek the globe for a year. Disciplined adventurers, who experienced all the joys and frustrations of travel and still managed to stay within their planned budget..

As they immersed themselves in cultures across four continents, their experiences were wondrous,  hair-raising and sometimes humorous.

Irene was already a seasoned travel writer, so she decided to write a book to assist others in their travel plans and to provide armchair travelers with the an insider view of their experiences. Their personal challenge was to travel for the same cost as staying at home, yet adhering to their older travellers’ motto “we are not here to suffer”. Her book is full of tips and the lessons they learned, including the most valuable lesson of all, “expect the unexpected”. The result is Trekking the Globe With Mostly Gentle Footsteps, Twelve Countries in Twelve Months ready to be published in June 2010.

A pre-publication review is already on-line at HikeBikeTravel and an excerpt is posted below. he entire article may be downloaded by clicking on the link HikeBike_review-05-10

I love Irene’s explanations of the heritage of some common sayings. Learn what ‘saving face’ means in the Chinese culture. Find out how the Black Hole of Calcutta got its name. Look for information on Indian customs concerning cremations. Have you heard of India’s third sex – the hijra? Italy’s Vestal Virgins are explained as are the musical and artistic genius of many European artists. These factual tidbits were a delight.

Charles Clapham has introduced many urban dwellers to the art of finding and walking on the many natural trails that adjoin the urban areas of Vancouver. With the 2nd edition of Great Walks of Vancouver, he expands the many suggested walks to include Squamish and Whistler areas.

As Charles explains in his introduction to the book,

If you think you know Vancouver by travelling through it by automobile, you will not recognize the city that you learn by exploring on foot.
Metro Vancouver is fortunate in being blessed with an abundance of walking routes. You can link parks, dikes, ravines, trails and quiet roads to walk from almost any point in Vancouver to any other (there are a few difficult places to reach but not many). Great Walks of Vancouver describes a 500-km network of trails that lets you explore the whole area . . .

A strong community of walkers use Clapham’s books to plan their urban adventures. Now, to assist in giving walkers updated information and guidance regarding temporary or permanent changes to the published walks, Charles has created a website.

The website www.greatwalksofvancouver.com will post changes that affect the routing of the walks or access to them, but be aware that bus timetables change from time to time and check before you leave. If you note changes, you can also inform me at the website.
Happy walking!

Great Walks of Vancouver is available direct from the publisher, at local bookstores in the Lower Mainland, or for American visitors planning to walk around Vancouver, amazon.com

GIPL Author, Beth Rowles Scott has been receiving a lot of attention because of her book, “Pinch Me, A Long Walk from the Prairies”. The Afro News has written a glowing review that can be read here. A quote from the article is re-printed below.

Beth’s desire “to give hope, to give a chance to others” came from her own early life lessons. This new project which began on a kitchen table in 1993, called on Beth to apply all her best experiences of administration. Her belief in how important it is to encourage leadership, enhance education and strengthen community now led her from being a retired academic to a latter day activist in a far and foreign land. Looking forward to Kenya, Beth and George’s vision became the working motto for ACCES – “Kenyans Helping Kenyans”. – quote from the Afro News, Deidré Heim.

Foreword Magazine mentioned the book, calling it a “charming memoir”and BC Bookworld listed it under their Indie Books category.

The book follows Beth’s life from her childhood in Saskatchewan to her dedication to creating schools in Kenya in her senior years.

More information about the on-going work of creating and supporting schools in Kenya can be found by visiting the ACCESKENYA website or by e-mailing info@acceskenya.org. Net proceeds form the sale of the book are donated to ACES.
